Why Shop Local Matters in East Texas:
Every dollar spent locally makes a difference. When residents across Kaufman, Henderson, Anderson, Van Zandt, and Rains Counties choose to shop local, they do more than just buy products, they invest directly in their communities. Small businesses are the backbone of the East Texas economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and keeping tax dollars close to home.
“Shop Local” isn’t just a seasonal message, it is a sustainable strategy for keeping our local towns vibrant. Each purchase helps small businesses thrive and encourages future entrepreneurs to open and grow their own ventures with guidance from the Trinity Valley Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
What Is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event that takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving’s infamous “Black Friday.” This year, it falls on November 29, 2025. The day is dedicated to supporting local shops, restaurants, service providers, and makers who keep East Texas communities strong.
Small Business Saturday was started by American Express in 2010, and has become a powerful movement encouraging people to shop small and think local during the busy holiday season. For residents of the Trinity Valley region, this is an opportunity to celebrate the hard-working business owners who make our communities special.
How Shopping Local Strengthens Our Communities:
When you buy from a local business, the impact goes far beyond your purchase. Local spending helps build stronger economies and tighter communities in counties like Kaufman and Henderson. Benefits of shopping local include:
- Job Creation: Small businesses employ local residents and keep talent in the community.
- Economic Growth: More local sales mean more local investment and tax revenue.
- Community Connection: Local businesses often sponsor schools, youth programs, and civic events.
- Unique Products: You’ll find handcrafted goods and local services not available from national chains.
- Environmental Impact: Shopping nearby reduces transportation costs and carbon footprints.
Whether you’re visiting a family-owned diner in Van Zandt County, or browsing a holiday market in Anderson County, every dollar spent locally supports your neighbors and builds a more resilient economy.
Spotlight on East Texas Counties:
Each county within the Trinity Valley SBDC service area has its own thriving local business community. This Small Business Saturday, explore and support what makes each one unique:
- Kaufman County: Discover boutiques, local eateries, and artisans in downtown Kaufman and Terrell.
- Henderson County: Shop charming antique stores and handmade goods in Athens and Chandler.
- Anderson County: Support local coffee shops, bakeries, and craftspeople in Palestine.
- Van Zandt County: Visit the First Monday Trade Days in Canton and other local vendors.
- Rains County: Celebrate small-town charm by shopping locally in Emory and Point.
Each of these communities offers a chance to connect, shop small, and celebrate what makes East Texas special.
Ways to Support Local Businesses Year-Round:
While Small Business Saturday is a great annual event, supporting local businesses year-round has an even greater impact. You don’t have to wait Small Business Saturday in November to make a difference. Here are a few simple ways you can keep your dollars local all year:
- Choose local first – before clicking “Add to the Cart,” check if a nearby shop, maker, or service provider offers the same item.
- Buy gift cards from local shops and restaurants. Perfect for holidays, birthdays, or “just because.” Gift cards keep dollars local and introduce new people to the business.
- Leave online reviews to help small businesses attract more customers. Google, Facebook, and Yelp reviews help small businesses get found by others. They’re FREE for you and extremely valuable for them.
- Follow and share local businesses on social media to expand their reach. Post a photo of your purchase, tag the business, or simply share their page. This boosts visibility more than you think.
- Engage with their post. Likes, comments, and shares help small businesses show up more frequently in newsfeeds.
- Hire local service providers for repairs, maintenance, or creative projects. Think photobooths, mechanics, salons, tax preparers, daycare, landscaping — local service providers rely heavily on referrals and community support.
- Buy from local makers. Craftspeople, artists, bakers, and small-batch producers often have unique items you won’t find anywhere else.
- Attend community markets and festivals that highlight local vendors. Chambers, Main Street Programs, and SBDCs often host pop-ups, markets, and seasonal events that highlight local entrepreneurs.
- Dine at local restaurants. Independent eateries reinvest into the community.
- Refer businesses to friends and family. Word-of-mouth is still the strongest marketing tool small businesses have.
- Shop early for the holidays. This helps avoid last-minute rushes and gives local businesses time to reorder or prepare custom items. Small businesses don’t have the staff or inventory of big-box stores — but they offer personal service, customized help, and community connection.
When we make a habit of supporting Shop Local, we build stronger communities that can weather economic challenges and continue to grow.
How to Get Involved This Small Business Saturday:
Getting involved is easy! Start by making a list of your favorite local businesses to visit. Encourage your family and friends to join you for a day of community connection and discovery. Here are some ideas:
- Check with your local chamber for shop local games, i.e. Athens has a Love Local Bingo
- Plan a “Shop Local Saturday” tour through your county’s downtown areas.
- Share your purchases and shout-outs on social media using hashtags like #ShopSmall and #ShopLocalEastTexas.
- Attend local holiday markets or vendor fairs.
- Give the gift of local this holiday season by purchasing locally made products and experiences.
The Trinity Valley SBDC encourages everyone in the region to make Small Business Saturday a community celebration, one that supports jobs, fosters innovation, and strengthens East Texas families.
